Incredibly rude thieves!

I just had a tweet from @Kraggy complimenting me on how nice my t-shirts looked on a stall at the Truman brewery Xmas fair. I couldn't believe it when I saw the pictures he took!
I'm not there and whoever printed them is selling them without my permission.
Right now they are there making money with my work! They got them printed before I even had a chance to do that myself. Rude Thieves!Arggg! Should you read this and you saw it please tell me and watch out yourself! It's so sad this happens really ...

This is absolutely awful. I don't know how people can be so selfish and greedy.

It's awful and still happening right now.
Bad bad greed!

I really feel for you and hope you can do something about this to stop them from doing it again, because it's just so rude and selfish. It's your work that you have worked hard on, not theirs and yet they think they can receive profits on it!
It's just greedy and your work is so lovely and you don't deserve it at all :(

They must have just pulled the low res versions off my website! Slimy! Baaaaa!

It just shows that some people really don't understand the value of other people's work and the fact we do this for actual money, to actually live, and it's not just some fun thing you can rip off and make your own money out of it. How can they think this is ok?? So sorry. Like I said on twitter, we'll form a crack team of ninja illustrators and kick some thieving ass!

xx

The sad part is that Silkscreen images are low res by nature... 72 dpi isn't all that different from the weft of the screens... digital printing on cloth is equally forgiving. I'd call the people that rented the table space, the better business bureau and any town commission dealing with bootleg items... PUT THE SCREWS ON THEM FROM ALL SIDES!

wtf???! Hope you get this sorted out Sandra. This totally sucks :( xxx

There are a LOT OF THEM there!!...Jesus...

dude- nightmare. So sorry to hear about this.

So sorry! This is truly the bad end of technology. I have to wonder how often this happens and we know nothing about it!

Michelle Kondrich said...

They've probably stolen every design there. Too bad you can't just call the police when that happens.

Anke Weckmann said...

And they're doing it in the city you live in! How unbelievably cheeky.

They are actually selling in Hackney. I live here! It's on my doorstep and I would have been very very likely to stroll through the market today! Shame I didn't! I probably would have had a heart attack! Grrr

What complete Shits! They could not have thought this was okay, in any way. This seems to be happening to a lot of people at the moment. I'm so sorry it's happened to you too. Give them hell next weekend!

:O! Unbelievable! And how stupid are they? How can they sell those in your own hometown and think they can get away with it? I really want to see their faces when you tell them what you think about this! .. Good luck!!

This is TERRIBLE! I am so sick of this happening. Disgust :(

I haven't been to Brick Lane at weekends for ages, but that's the kind of things that makes me want to go there and tell them what I think! Shame I'm not in London next weekend...

Thats awful. Are u a member of AOI and ARTQUEST.ORG.UK? Contact them and ask for advice and how to best take action and yes, go there, stand there for a day with your original artwork and tell everyone who is looking at their stuff that they are thief's and that if they buy from them they support it and bring like ten friends.

Assholes.

asa said...

also contact the people who arrange the market and ask what kind of reputation they want, surely it can't be to support that ind of behavior but to nourish real creativity and art

● Sandra Dieckmann Illustration ● said...

Yes, I will contact the venue today and let them know that this is going on under their nose. It really isn't right. I'm not currently represented but I will try and find out more information on how to go about this. The citizen's advice bureau might help ...

Is the illustration of the girl with mickey ears yours? I recognise that one..

● Sandra Dieckmann Illustration ● said...

No it isn't but let me have a little browse through my illustrator friends ... the style seems familiar!

No matter how many times i've seen this sort of thing it still shocks me! So disgraceful, rude and unfair! Call the AOI even if you're not a member, they might be able to offer some sort of advice. Also, see this website, http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com/blog3/ the more people that know, the more hope you might have of sorting it out. Good luck! x

You need to contact the Upmarket/Trumans Market people asap to let them know what's happening. Sadly as much as they say "hand made" and "designer maker" only they are far from sticking to their own criteria.
There are loads of "made in China" rip offs at their markets so it would be a good idea to maybe find a few designer makers which operate from there, join forces and put the pressure on. It's not a cheap market to rent a stall from and it's pretty hard making a living even breaking even! I did a slog there and vowed to never again as they seem to be more interested in making money off the stall holders rather then offering one off art and craft pieces.
My advice...Join ACID as maybe they can help with copyright.
Personally I would go there with a huge bloke friend with an "official" looking letter and let them - the vendors on the stall - know that this hasn't gone unnoticed and that they should stop selling the rip offs immediately under threat of legal action. I'd like to see them call the police...they won't! Let them know that if they continue that you'll take them to court...even if you don't make them think you will! Good luck.

Good luck with everything you have in mind for your retaliation. These people deserve everything you can throw at them. Keep us posted with how things go. It's scary how easily it could happen to any of us, and we might never know!

this is terrible! I will kick them if I ever see them :(

Sarah Bailey said...

This is pretty terrible that people are doing this, I hope you get it sorted out, your artwork is very impressive and only you should be making money off it no-one else.

This is just an idea and i'm sure you probably thought of it already, but you could try adding a big Copyright C to your pictures, once you've put them on the PC but before you upload them onto sites. If you get it right they can't get rid of it from the picture and it wouldn't be worth even trying to copy designs, that way it could keep them safe. I don't know how easy it is to do as i've never done it myself, but I have seen it done on facebook, twitter and sites like that so I do know it's do-able.

Hi

Just found your blog and reading this with interest as I trade at Brick Lane. You should call Trading Standards, they can close the stall down I believe, especiall if you are there as the artist to prove the theft!
Agree too with Selene16; you can put a watermark across your pics. I see loads of eople on Etsy doing this.
Best of luck with getting these bastards sorted out x

That's disgraceful!!! Not one of you but THREE of you have clearly had your work stolen.

Dear Sandra, This happened to me and Artquest weren't that helpful, I joined ACID, it costs a bit but I thought it was worth it. Other people I know found Briffa similarly useful. I wanted to nip it in the bud rather than accept this as a hazard of our internet era. Now I have the Acid stuff and copyright info on my website. You cant stop the really unscrupulous but you can broadcast your rights better as a deterrent. So sorry this happened to you, nasty nasty stuff, good luck
