Yesterday night we celebrated the launch of Alberta Jones, Liz & Anna Clough's and my joined exhibition. I only got the chance to take these two pictures on my phone right after we finishes setting up, which only took about the whole day, but everything went wonderfully well and we had a great night filled with fun and dancing. I will return to the exhibition coming week to take some better pictures. Maybe I can even find someone that photographed during the party. Everything is up at Biddle Bros pub in Hackney, East London for about 6 weeks from now and framed pieces (signed specifically for the exhibition) are available for purchase in the venue. Enjoy the rest of this Sunday!

Isn't December wild! I had no idea it was the 10th already. How did that happen? In between commissions, shop orders, emails, calls, other work and various social events most of us like my good self will most probably catch a cold or even the flu and then all gets even tougher. Don't give up soon we can eat and be lazy and have a proper rest ;-)

Tonight is a night of great achievement as I have finally managed to reply to all of my fifty odd unanswered emails (I'm not kidding) and I'm finally back here writing a wee update.

Let me firstly tell you about Paper Circus who launched in the Argos Leicester store last Friday and who are selling a range of festive greeting cards by me and a bunch of other very talented UK designers to raise money and to help improve the lives of Teenagers fighting cancer. In total up till today Paper Circus have managed to raise a massive £1289,49 for Teenage Cancer Trust already! Go and have a look over there and maybe even spend a penny for the good cause. Secondly the very good Jamie Mills, super Kraggy and myself will be selling our wares at the Xmas market in the Truman Brewery in Shoreditch, East London this Sunday (YES, which is tomorrow). Trading hours are 10am till 5pm and if you fancy it you should drop by. We could have a mulled wine and a chat. It will definitely take my mind off the cold and the runny nose!

This image is also part of the same commission I have been working on for Tallow.

Tallow is a contemporary women's brand which embraces the exquisiteness, grace and vitality of female surfing - A celebration of surfing as a pass time, a culture and an expression of self.

I was so lucky to be picked as one of the artists to collaborate for the Summer 2012 collection creating artwork and repeat pattern for their awesome apparel/swimwear range.

Good afternoon! I have to say this was hard. Never have I procrastinated so long over doing something.
It's not true at all actually as I am a brilliant procrastinator ... but still.

I've been a bit quite on here I know! I have to apologise. It's only because I'm printing, packing, sending, drawing, emailing, calling all hours of every day and night. I want to say Thanks to you all for being so forgiving with me while I relentlessly promote my products in the run up to Christmas ;-)

There is some news I'd love to share with you ::

First of all if you haven't seen already Paper Darts Publishing has finally released their wonderful book Get In If You Want To Live with short stories written by John Jodzio and illustrated by 19 illustrators from around the globe including Ruben Ireland and my good self for example. It is beautifully designed so be sure to click the links!

The other exiting news are that from today I'm officially represented by and have joined the family at 'Jules Beazley Represents'. I'm excited for our future together.

Also: Tons of new goodies have appeared in my shop over the last week. I have been seriously busy in the studio and even got to employ some lovely peeps to help me out for the first time.
There are new tote bags of my White Bison illustration and native American pattern.

My Christmas Cards 2011 are finally out as well!

The 2011 collection features one of each card :: Kes, Winter & Robin Trees.
My 2010 cards the 'Festive Furries' have also been re-released and feature the Christmas Lynx, Bear Sleigh and the Winter Wolf. They are also available separately in my shop.

Yesterday I wrote this blog post and then I got so distracted I never shared it. Oh dear! How are you all?

The air is changing, the colours are slowly changing and we are changing as we move into another autumn. It feels nice. A bit of calm and a comforting season in this busy life.

This morning I took a photograph out of my window. It was light but the moon was still there in the sky.

I think I decided today that I like being up early ;-)

In the current issue of Digital Artist (25) is a six page interview with me where I talk about my work, worldly balances and my collaborative projects. I really enjoyed the introduction written to the piece.

"The best folktales have a dark edge. Conversely, the best folk art pops with colour - perhaps as a visual way of whistling in the dark, perhaps a celebration of the richness of northern Europe's storytelling tradition.
Sandra Dieckmann's nature inspired illustration has got that elusive, comfortable yet disquieting quality in spades. (...)"

It's a rather nice issue and also features an artist retrospective on the very brilliant Nick Sheehy.

Let me finish the blog post with this snippet from the Pink & Blue blog with a feature of my work and a beautiful credit to Steve Jobs who sadly passed away last week. Hear us roar!

"I think we were all sort of devastated with the loss of Steve Jobs yesterday. In terms of creativity in communications and innovations- the guy was simply the best. After I heard the news of his death I was looking at these illustrations by Sandra Dieckmann and was reminded of what a force a nature Jobs was in technology and creative thinking. He was humble, caring and subtle- but he truly changed our world and his "roar" will be heard for lifetimes. I will truly miss him. "

Renegade Craft Fair London

In the afternoon today I made my way leisurely to Renegade Craft Fair to have a gander what was going on and I'm glad I did. Bricklane was madly busy and full of tourists and I was glad to get off the street.

I got to meet James Ward @Jimbobart who was most welcoming when I awkwardly introduced myself flashing my little business card. Here is dressed as a wolf selling his super fantastic animal goodness ;-)

The display of Desiree B. also caught my eye. A fantastic green mix of sewn owls and trees.

One Long Moment

I haven't had a minute in so long to blog properly but here I am. I thought I update you guys what's been going on recently. Where do I start and how will I not forget about half of it?

First of all I stocked up on everything and a whole box of beautiful greeting cards arrived from Ripe Digital yesterday. Absolutely awesome quality and highly recommended. The cards will be available in my Etsy shop soon. Thank you all for visiting my store and sending me those lovely emails and comments. I try my best and answer everybody but time flies away so quickly these days and this is still only a one man show. I really appreciate every single word. Thanks so much!

These lovely items are also making their way to the shops of my stockists which leads me to the second topic of this blog post.

I have three new and very brilliant stockist selling my wares.

So I'm sitting here and continue drawing Kes into the late hours ... I have never read the book but watched the film a few days ago and I'm still not over it. It's a heart braking gem and I recommend very much that you watch it.

I also finally joined Instagram and I have been busy posting loads of photos to annoy you all.

Yesterday I was notified that I had won the 'Emerging Talent' category at the Cheltenham Illustration awards 2011. My work was chosen by Oscar winner Shaun Tan and I'm over the moon.

This is the winning illustration 'Fox Tree'. You probably know it already ;-)

I also wanted to announce that my work has been published in this beautiful book 'Illustrators Unlimited' this month alongside greats like Oliver Jeffers, Brecht Evens & Caitlin Hackett / published by Gestalten and available here soon.

'Illustrators Unlimited presents the work of cutting-edge illustration talents scouted from around the world. They are working independently from fleeting trends and represent the best of the virtually inexhaustible possibilities of styles and techniques that are practiced today.

I also had the pleasure of spending a few days at Jamie Mill's beautiful home this week.
If I had a magic ring that I could turn three times to wish myself back I would.
It was really very very nice there and I have absolutely fallen in love with the two pups and five cats there and the chickens weren't bad either ;-)

This morning talented photographer Flora Deborah came to visit me to take some images of me and my work space. An interview and the pictures will be published online soon through Flora's new project. I'll let you all know of course when that goes life. It was really weird being in front of the lense.
I hope I didn't screw my face up too much. I was so sweaty and nervous but Flora was great fun and really put me at ease in the end. We even went for a walk to take some shots outside my area and I showed her a few of my favourite places.

Also :: My work in Juxtapoz this week which was a nice surprise as I went away at the weekend and had no idea! Thank you Juxtapoz!

... I had no better title and this has nothing to do with Genesis.
Will you believe we are in August? Look at Harold there on the right, he can't believe it either.
I guess I try and be back ... I always say that though. The realisation that I haven't blogged for two weeks leaves me speechless. Were have the two weeks gone? Does time speed up the older you get?
How are you doing? I haven't seen you for ages! I have to tell you something ... maybe I'm just not such an avid blogger in the end.
While I'm waiting for and feeding my printer with paper to get on top of my Etsy orders I decided to yet again take pictures of my home studio. As you can see it is very tidy and I have extended my tables to the right. This is all due to a massive changing frenzy that overcomes me when I'm about to deliver some serious workload. I believe it is called procrastination and a big part of my creative process.
Here we are anyways ... the walls are fuller and after two month here I really really have settled in.
My three Australian b&w animal prints are finally up and there is even a cosy sitting area in the window bay that you can sitt in when you come and visit me to slurp tea or coffee or other beverages of your choice. It's a good thing you are not here today though as I would be rambling on as I do now! Another part of me procrastinating.
Let's hope that after I have taking myself for my walk, have changed the plant pot from one side of the room to the other about 50 times over, have stared at my dirty feet and refreshed pages I will finally get to draw that wolf that got dyed green and got made up to look like a German Shepard. I don't know.

I'm within the final week of a bigger job and have just send everything over for a final evaluation and feedback after two months of working on two large images. Fingers crossed now!
Here are the tiniest snippets ... far far from the actual image but I was keen to show you something ;-)

Soon I should be back to having a little time to continue working on my book Tukota the white bison amongst a book illustration and a few other jobs in August. This year is moving so fast. Believe it!

Sometimes you get gifts that make you smile and sometimes there is some that make you dance and sing and say Ohhhh!

I was really impressed and am so so thankful for the variety, effort and sheer beauty of this package I received of the wonderful Annarack the other day. Handmade Origami boxes, little drawings, a very lovely letter and this amazing box with an intricately cut landscape.
I even got a tiny robot pendant from the 60's/70's.
Really impressive work Anna Jane Searle ! You should all go visit her work on Flickr and add her on Twitter. Her embroidery work that most don't know about is absolutely stunning and Anna Jane is probably one of the most chatty people I have ever met online ... you won't be dissapointed!

This is where I work.
I have changed my workspace around once again. Away from the window and the blinding light.
While it is quite on my blog this week I'm working away on the final stages of a job that's soon due and envy Little Crumb on my right relaxing his paws on his favourite seat.

Tomorrow I shall blog about a lovely gift I received yesterday. Unfortunately the light is gone for today.

I was so fortunate to receive this beautiful gift of her a few days ago and haven't been able to put it down since. I'm in love with her work and her spirit and I wanted to share a few images of her stunningly illustrated book with you. Thank you Gabriella and keep it up!

Yesterday ...

... I started working back at the RSPCA for a week.

Some awful heartless person had dumped these 5 wonderful kitties in a box and had left them by the site of the road. Two of them where gingers about 6 weeks old and the other three much younger. Full of fleas and flu they had been left in the rain. I enjoyed having them with me all day and was happy to see them taking food and water in. Really sad to say goodbye at night. I wish I could adopt them all!

In the evening I went to Wimbledon College of Art to see various BA's final degree shows and have a few drinks.My good friend Alberta Jones was exhibiting her amazing Design for performance pieces.
Her play that I saw live a few weeks ago was astonishing and her animation ... ohhh ... you need to see for yourself!

For my current commission I'm looking at lake Tahoe. The Trees, the mountains, the water & the wildlife that calls this wild place their home. I want to be there so much myself ... despite the invite I had ... I really can't! Nevertheless it feels nice being hired to do exactly what you love. Yes ... good times!

I have loved this song by Daniel Johnston for many many years. It means a lot to me and I'm sure as well to other people. I watched him live in London last year and it really was one of these moments when time stood still. I think Daniel is an inspiration to all of us. A pure heart.
If you have never heard or seen any of his music or art then start by watching the documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston".
I started hand-lettering the quote in the evening and now it is 4:15 a.m ... I must have listen to the song 30 times over and completely gotten stuck in the moment. Nice.

Stags, Patterns & Digital Arts Magazine

My friends have left me alone to go to Yorkshire for a few days and to play a gig and I'm now spending my weekend alone catching up with everything. It's nice to be alone sometimes!

To get going this morning I worked on this native american pattern in relationship with my upcoming book Tukota. The print is available for purchase in my Society6 store for now until I have my new paper stock and prints all sorted for my Etsy shop. A bit of warming up and on to the next thing ... Two stags. Believe!

This image is only one fractions of a larger image I'm working on at the moment ... The final image will be 1.88 m high and hand-drawn in detail as well as collaged over the next 2 months.

Tukota is taking a backseat at the moment while I'm working on this but I will continue working on it whenever I get the time.

At The Vet

This morning I went to the RSPCA veterinary hospital to get Little Crumb his boosters. He wasn't impressed!
Just wanted to share a few pics with you of who I met. I absolutely love going there and often wish I had followed my dream to become a vet.

Here is Milo, a little dog with a super charismatic face and a great little character. I immediately fell in love with him.
Milo has 3 tumors and things are not looking so great ;( ...

Heide

I was looking at pictures of stags fighting tonight in research for a project I'm working on at the moment and instead of drawing the animals I started to draw the plants around them. I wasn't thinking about what I was doing and a bit later I found myself working on this repeat pattern. I call it 'Heide' as it reminds me of the Lueneburger Heide in Germany ;-)

I will really have to focus now ... Tomorrow I shall begin on the stags ... there is bears planned, wolfs, eagles, owls and plenty of scenery ...mountains, water and all kinds of lovely things. The final images are 1.88m high so I have a lot to draw ... goodnight all of you! Here are some old pictures of some fierce stags!

Old Women

I have promised myself this year to tackle the subject of humans.
I'm pretty shy about drawing faces but this morning I just sat down and started sketching.

I was really inspired by some folks that I met at the Alternative Press Festival at the weekend. Especially Catell Ronca who was amazing to speak to and who pushed me to just start .

I'm used to working with close photographic references to get my animal proportions just right. This time I just drew loosely and I quite like how my line is so much softer. Now lets see if I manage to bring both together ;-)

I have also finally caught Little Crumb. He hates being in the house these days. The pictures took a lot of convincing and he is totally pissed off now and has gone out to join his cat friends once again ...
